Stone
By John C. Yu (China)
Translated by Chu Yan (China)
The desktop paperweight, hard and stony,
Was lying there saliently.
Could it have been the stone sphere,
Heavy and tricky,
That Sisyphus rolled uphill endlessly?
Could any of the stones ever existed
Have been psychic, and nod with ceremony?
Stone could be Wukong;
Stone could be Baoyu;
Stone could be pearl;
Stone could be crystal;
Stone could be a channeler turtle;
Stone could be a grain of gold;
Stone could be a mural;
Stone could be ivories;
Stone could be Buddha relics;
Stone could be a dinosaur skeleton, a massive wonder.
Day after day, there was a mystical meteor shower.
Piece after piece, movable types were carved from lead.
From Nvwa’s motherly hands, which repaired the cracks overhead,
From the arch of heaven, where pictographs spread,
Along the Palaeolithic and Neolithic Ages gorgeously rusty,
Along the elegant imperial jade seals of every dynasty,
Along the memorial towers, one gate opening into another arch,
Along every trace of cobblestone, sea sand, coal seam and oil rock,
Towards the stone doorsteps mantled with moss brightly green,
Stone grew, like how nerves extend and deepen.
Into the Great Wall,
Ancient stelae,
Eight Military Diagrams by Zhuge Kongming,
And various inexhaustible mineral veins.
Stone – the still life, wordless but temperate;
The friend of humans, melancholy and primary –
Is fate and antiquity.
All things from stone are born;
All things for stone are grown;
All things into stone are gone.
The scratched and bruised globe
Is the biggest stone in the world.
Page by page, The Story of the Stone is eternally rerun,
And smaller and rounder the globe is worn and torn.
