Neil: In Real English, we look at words and phrases that you might not find in your dictionary.
Helen: 英語(yǔ)是一種富有成語(yǔ)和不同語(yǔ)言習(xí)慣的語(yǔ)言，所以要想學(xué)習(xí)地道純正的英國(guó)英語(yǔ)，了解英國(guó)人常用的通俗語(yǔ)言和表達(dá)方式也是非常重要的。
Neil: Today's expression is 'a bite to eat'.
Helen: 聽起來這個(gè)短語(yǔ)和吃有關(guān)，對(duì)不對(duì)Neil？
Neil: Yes, it certainly does have something to do with eating. To have a bite to eat means to go and have something to eat.
Helen: 這種說法是指吃什么東西都行還是說是要吃正經(jīng)的一頓飯呢？
Neil: It usually means to have a small amount of food – so a snack or a light meal – or it can just mean to go and eat some food or a meal.
Helen: Bite就是用嘴咬的意思，而a bite to eat一般就是專指隨便的吃點(diǎn)什么東西或者吃頓便飯的意思。
Neil: Here are some examples of how we might use it.

A: I'm hungry – shall we go for a bite to eat?
B: Sounds good.
A: So are we going to see the new Harry Potter film later?
B: Yes. If we meet at 6 we should have time for a quick bite first.
Helen: 剛才他倆說的是a quick bite就是很快的吃點(diǎn)東西。所以a bite to eat也可以簡(jiǎn)單說成a bite – 都是咬一口什么東西吃，就是隨便吃點(diǎn)東西的意思。
Neil: All this talk of food is making me hungry…
Helen: Shall we go for a bite to eat?
